Montgomery County, Virginia: 250 Years of History

ON DISPLAY

June 24, 2026 - January 2027

Formed when Fincastle County disbanded in late 1776, Montgomery County had two sister counties: Washington and Kentucky. The original Montgomery County boundary was decreased through the formation of West Virginia in 1863 and ten other Virginia counties between 1790 and 1887.

Agriculture, industry, schools, and tourism followed the early settlers to transform the expanse of land into the complex region we now know.

Spanning two levels of the Montgomery Museum building, this exhibit is the largest ever undertaken by the Museum.

Funding for this exhibit was provided by the Virginia 250 Grant Fund, presented by the Department of Historic Resources.
