Lewis Miller: Observer of Man and Nature

Come discover Lewis Miller! Our newly installed Lewis Miller exhibit invites visitors to explore the work of a remarkable folk artist, carpenter, and acute observer of early American life.

Born in 1796 to German immigrant parents in York, Pennsylvania, Miller became known for his detailed drawings of people, places, and everyday activities. He had a particular fondness for Christiansburg and captured its early scenery and residents, giving a glimpse into life in our community.

Miller created nearly 2,000 drawings, including around 200 depicting the South. His work goes beyond simply illustrating people, it captures how they worked, the tools they used, and how people interacted with one another. The exhibit will be on display through the beginning of December, so there’s still time to come see Lewis Miller’s work! Find the Lewis Miller exhibit in the North Wing Gallery of the museum by taking the stairs beside the Children’s Room.
