<image:title>Events Page - Uncovering: Secrets of the Ledger - Curious to know how we put together our Secrets of the Ledger exhibit? Sherry Wyatt and Becky Novy will be giving a special talk on Thursday, July 31 from 5 - 7 pm that will share how we uncovered the secrets of the ledger.</image:title>
<image:caption>Before opening in September of 2024, this exhibit had been in production for over one and a half years - hundreds and hundreds of hours went into transcribing the ledger, analyzing its contents and finding patterns, researching 1820s shopping habits and culture, and identifying the history of customers who frequented the store. This process involved over 34 volunteers, plus staff! However, we started this increasingly complex project by outlining the big ideas and main concepts that we wanted to focus upon - check out our original idea chart! Over a year later, these ideas had solidified into a well rounded exhibit with a digital interactive, sensory engaging experiences, and a video to help immerse you in an 1820s general store! This event is free and open to the public. Learn, listen, and enjoy some refreshments!</image:caption>

We went above and beyond our Give Local goal in 2024 - help us keep that momentum going! Help us reach the amount raised last year - we're setting our Give Local Goal for 2025 at $61,240! Your support makes all the difference to the Montgomery Museum’s capability to continue serving the community, protect our collection, and offer stellar community programming. Considering giving to the museum for Give Local - from June 1 to 26 at noon we’ll be collecting donations to reach our goal for this year’s Give Local. Even a donation of $5 helps us out immensely!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mark your calendars for a special Juneteenth celebration - Sheree Scarborough will be here at the Montgomery Museum presenting her "Nannie Berger Hairston: A Trailblazer for Civil Rights" talk. Nannie Berger Hairston was a crusader for justice in twentieth century Virginia. She was born in West Virginia in 1921, a little more than fifty years after the end of the Civil War. She attended segregated schools, graduated, married, and started a family. When Nannie’s husband, John, lost his job in the coal mine, the Hairstons moved to Christiansburg, Virginia. It was the height of Jim Crow, and yet, against great odds, she and John became leaders in the community, advocating for civil rights and social justice. Nannie Hairston’s advice was sought by the powerless as well as the powerful. At the time of her death in 2017, she had taken her place as an icon for truth, justice and love. Local author Sheree Scarborough uses Nannie Hairston’s own words to tell her story. Come attend this special celebration on Thursday, June 19, from 5 - 7 PM! This event is free and open to the public!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Join us on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 5:00PM -7:00PM for a reception celebrating the Secrets of the Ledger, Michele Walter, Frances Frederick exhibitions! Delve into the secrets of a 1820s general store, run by William Kyle in downtown Christiansburg. Recreated and researched using the ledger book carefully penned in Kyle’s complex script, the ledger opens a portal into how those in Christiansburg lived in the 1820s. This exhibition uses information from the ledger to analyze and interpret business in the store, the products sold, frequent customers, and occurrences where women and enslaved individuals interacted with the store. Explore the ledger for yourself in this interactive exhibition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Frances Frederick describes herself as a jack of all trades, but a less modest and more accurate description might be a polymath, a person of great and varied learning. She plays the piano and the violin well enough to be in the orchestra of operas. Her forays into the art world encompass not only the two-dimensional art in the new exhibit at the Montgomery Museum, but also weaving and spinning, paper making, Chinese printing, stained glass, pottery, and steel sculpture.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art Exhibit List - Sue Steele Thomas & Radford Thomas - Faces: Radford Thomas has a passion for creating portraits that range from photo-realistic imagery to abstract rendition in his complex style of making marks and overlaying colors for blending. When viewed from a distance, the viewer’s eye mixes the colors of nearby dots, resulting in more intense and vibrant hues than those achieved by mixing paints on a palette. His portraits are done in oil, acrylic, and ink. The exhibit will showcase black and white portraits. Steele Thomas is currently painting subjects from nature, in gouache, opaque watercolor, which include crows, a blue jay, and a cardinal.</image:title>

<image:title>Art Exhibit List - Sue Steele Thomas & Radford Thomas - Places: These two painters are inspired from traveling and exhibiting, over the decades, from California, Florida, Maine to Texas, to mention a few. They packed up the van, named Van Gogh, and got out on the road again. Steele Thomas will exhibit a seascape with a lobster boat she created from traveling to Maine.</image:title>
<image:caption>Radford Thomas will exhibit Cherry Tree Summer, an oil that displays its trunk and sky as your eyes connect the dots. Texas City Disaster (left) depicts the aftermath of one of the most catastrophic industrial fires in United States history. The colors make the viewer feel the heat and the fear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pearce must also be a fan of Mondrian, as his round wooden vase titled “Homage to Piet Mondrian” showcases Mondrian’s iconic primary colors and black lines at right angles. Inside the vase, at the bottom, he has used wood burning to produce a portrait of the renowned artist. Some sculptures are adorned with color using an airbrush. The areas that are not to be colored are covered. Then, the airbrush is applied. This method can be repeated to add other colors. In certain cases, the airbrush can create a gradient of color, transitioning from vibrant to subtle. “Flames” is an excellent example of the use of color both inside and outside the vase.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What's not to like about an organization with no president, no officers, and no minutes? The Backyard Stone Carvers (BYSC) is such an organization, and they will showcase their remarkable work at an upcoming exhibit at the Montgomery Museum of Art and History. Featured artists include Linda Correll, Pam Goff, Judy Franklin, Jennifer Lovejoy, Terry Warthen, Lisa McNair, Dottie Mae Atkins Neikirk, Hiromi Okumura, Melissa Pilkington, Estill Putney, and Andy Sisson. The BYSC started meeting in Darcy Meeker’s backyard to share their tools, expertise, and passion for three-dimensional art.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The starting material for their creations is stone, typically alabaster or soapstone due to their softer nature compared to marble or granite, which necessitate different carving techniques. Alabaster is usually sourced from the western United States or Italy, while soapstone originates from the western U.S. or Canada. While most stone in Virginia is unsuitable, alberene soapstone carves well and is used in one of the pieces in this exhibition, The is a reason for working in a back yard rather than indoors. The carving process creates a fine dust that makes using face masks a necessity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Exhibit List - Backyard Stone Carvers - Waiting (c) Judy Franklin</image:title>
<image:caption>While the exact origins of BYSC are uncertain, a memory from the late 1990s vividly recalls meeting at Darcy’s house to order stone. Upon receiving the stone, Darcy instructed the new students to place it on the porch rail one by one, instructing them to stand back, observe, and remain silent. A mixture of childlike awe, curiosity, and a hint of fear overcame them. Darcy then guided them to cover the stone with their hands and close their eyes, creating a magical experience. This initial step involves connecting with the stone and tapping into one’s inner child. The carving process commences with a hammer and chisel, sometimes aided by power tools, to eliminate excess material. How they know what is excess and what is essential is something of a mystery. Once the excess material has been removed, the carver transitions to rasps and rifles for intricate detailing. Polishing the carved stone serves as the final touch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the years, the Stone Carvers have cultivated a profound sense of camaraderie among its members. Sometimes, people need to share their problems, and other times, they simply need to forget about them. Some members have shared that working with this group has helped them overcome personal difficulties. While carving the stone, one tends to completely forget about everything else. In 2022, Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology collaborated with the Stone Carvers on a research project titled “Carving Out Creativity.” During this project, the carvers wore EEG caps to measure their brain waves while they carved. The research concluded in 2025, resulting in exhibits displayed at several locations, including the Cube (Moss Arts Center), Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, The Torpedo Factory, and the opening of the VT Innovation Campus in Alexandria, Virginia. <image:title>Press Releases - The Montgomery Museum of Art & History Hosts Blues Art Exhibit and Traveling Christiansburg Institute History Exhibit</image:title>
<image:caption>In a rich celebration of local history and art, the Montgomery Museum is hosting two exhibits: Portraits of the Blues developed in collaboration with the New River Blues Society and the traveling exhibit Shining a Light on Christiansburg Institute from Christiansburg Institute, Inc. The museum is pleased to share these two special exhibits with the community. Portraits of the Blues is developed in collaboration with the New River Blues Society and Christiansburg Institute, Inc. Featuring two talented artists, Anne Waldrop and Ken Pease, this art exhibit presents painted depictions of popular Blues musicians and singers. This art exhibit offers a creative, colorful, and musical representation of Blues musicians, demonstrating not only the talent of the featured artists, but also the immense degree of inspiration created by the Blues genre. While taking in a glimpse of the Blues, you can also learn more about Montgomery County music history in special collaborative history panels designed with Christiansburg Institute, Inc. Christiansburg Institute, Inc. is thrilled to be part of this dynamic collaborative exhibit, which delves into the profound role of music in African American culture across the New River Valley and beyond. For over a century, music—whether through the Virginia Singers, marching band, choir, or glee club—brought life and vibrancy to Christiansburg Industrial Institute. The Shining a Light traveling exhibit and selection of loaned artifacts from the Christiansburg Institute Museum & Archives help tell this rich and enduring story. Join us at the reception for Portraits of the Blues and Christiansburg Institute’s Shining a Light traveling exhibit on Thursday, March 27 from 5 - 7:00 PM! Food and refreshments will be served. Live Blues music will be performed during the reception.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Montgomery Museum is hosting art from the majority of Montgomery County’s public schools, with the student art shows being highly attended and much beloved by the community. This show offers a combined vision of student art across the county and has been specially curated by Elementary School Art Teachers. The Montgomery Museum strives to serve all members of the community and by exhibiting student art the museum encourages youth to embrace their creativity and artistic skills. The Montgomery Museum strives to serve all members of the community and by exhibiting student art the museum encourages youth to embrace their creativity and artistic skills. “Featuring artwork outside the school building recognizes students' accomplishments and fosters a connection with their community. It elevates the value of their artistic expression and promotes a sense of civic engagement,” says Linda Hinson, an art teacher and Montgomery Museum Arts Advisory Committee member. The Elementary School show will include student art from Auburn Elementary, Belview Elementary, Eastern Montgomery Elementary, Falling Branch Elementary, Gilbert Linkous Elementary, Harding Avenue Elementary, Kipps Elementary, Margaret Beeks Elementary, Christiansburg Elementary, and Price’s Fork Elementary. The Elementary School art will be on exhibit February 5 - February 28. The reception for the Elementary School Student Art Show will be held on Thursday, February 27, 5:00 -7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Judging for the elementary show will be made by a local retired art educator and local artist. Ribbons, sketchbooks, and markers will be given to students earning an “Award of Excellence.” Student awards are generously provided by the Blacksburg Regional Art Association (BRAA).</image:caption>

<image:title>Art & History Articles - How to Look at Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that on average, a person spends only 4 seconds looking at each individual artwork displayed in a museum? How you look at art matters - take the time to explore an artwork, how it makes you feel, and what it expresses. One good way to study art is to look at it and ask some "W" questions - like “Who, what, where, when, and why.” These questions will help you learn more about the artwork, the artist, and your own appreciation of art. Who made this object? Is the artwork made by a single person, or is it a collaborative piece? If you know any background information about the artist, you may be able to see how their personal experiences have informed the artistic process. Always read the artist biographies! What is the object? Note the physical qualities of the artwork, like material and size. Is it a small piece that invites close and intimate viewing, or do you feel the need to step back and view it from a distance to see it properly? Why? This is a big question - why was the artwork made, and what is it intended to communicate? The answers to these questions are sometimes arbitrary, or highly unique from one person to another. Art is subjective, and we all find meaning in different things. Art can be a simple appreciation of the subject, though it can also be intended to communicate a message, or incite thoughtfulness. Come try out these looking skills for yourself at the Montgomery Museum's Riotous Color exhibit by Andrea Brunais! She has many, many beautiful artworks for you to examine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art & History Articles - Art in the Collection - Crayon Portrait from Life, E. W. Simpson, 1888</image:title>
<image:caption>This crayon portrait was drawn by E. W. Simpson of Christiansburg in 1888. Simpson was likely Edwin W. Simpson, the son of A. D. and Eliza Simpson. His father farmed and the family likely lived near Hans Meadow (the corner of modern-day Roanoke and Depot streets). On reverse, this artwork is labeled "....Simpson, Christiansburg, Va." and "C--- [Crayon] Portrait Class, 1. Study from life." This class is thought to have been part of the curriculum at the Montgomery Male Academy since the subject is a young man in a cadet-style uniform. The careful blending of this portrait renders the sitter's form softly, capturing the light in the model's eyes as he glances to the artist. The Montgomery Male Academy was opened by the Presbytery of Montgomery County in 1850. Rev. Nicholas Chevalier (the pastor of Christiansburg Presbyterian Church) and Christiansburg physician Dr. Joseph Edie were initial leaders of the effort and William C. Hagan became the first principal. The school, which served only white boys, closed about 1899. (Gift of Wilderness Road Regional Museum)</image:caption>

<image:caption>As such, people in the early 1800s often drank alcohol such as whiskey, rum, and brandy during meals. Water was not considered to be a very safe drink. Alcohol was safer due to the distilling process. By the 1820s, American adults were drinking an average of 5 to 7 gallons of pure alcohol each year. William Kyle sold whiskey by the gallon, bottle, quart, and pint.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art & History Articles - Secrets of the Ledger - Whiskey and Drinking Habits</image:title>
<image:caption>Whiskey, brandy, and other spirits were often homemade from extra crops. By turning surplus grain such as rye, wheat, corn, or barley into alcohol, it could be used by the family or sold for cash. By the 1830s, people began to be concerned about the heavy alcohol consumption. Members of the Temperance Movement believed that alcohol use was a threat to society. These concerns led to the restriction of alcohol sales and later to Prohibition.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tom Jenssen - After retiring from the Biology Department at Virginia Tech in 2007, Tom Jenssen returned to an undergraduate interest in ceramics. His creations are thrown pieces to which are added glazes, melted glass, painted imagery, and “appropriated” objects. As a ceramist, Jenssen initially produced pieces that carried a whimsical sense with a touch of kitsch. More recently, however, topics have turned increasingly toward literal expression, as Jenssen continues to explore the traditional with the unexpected.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Ruth Lefko - “Paint like you mean it” Ruth is now five plus years into her second career as an artist and enjoying every minute. Art classes and seminars from Roanoke to Maine have helped refine her techniques in watercolor, acrylic, and pastels. She is active in the New River Valley art community as a member of the Blacksburg Regional Art Association and she also manages four Off-Site Galleries for the Montgomery Museum, Lewis Miller Art Center. P erhaps her most rewarding new venture has been to create a studio/gallery at the farm she shares with husband, Carl and their dogs and cats. Ruth now offers art classes to those eager to share in her passion for nature and creativity. With paintings in local galleries and juried shows, Ruth's style ranges from realism to abstract. No matter the style or subject, it is evident she finds joy in the beauty around her and in expressing life experiences through her art.</image:title>

Everyone loves to go to their mailbox to find someone has remembered them with a handwritten letter or a greeting card with a personal message inside. Many people hold dear and treasure these remembrances and tuck them away for later reflection. This is especially true today when email and texts are ephemeral and phone calls disappear when the connection ends.”</image:title>

Still fascinated by the nuances of light, shadow, and color, she works in a variety of media. Her work is currently focused on capturing the beauty of the landscape in oils, especially in her native Giles County and the New River Valley of Virginia. Stephens has a B.A. from Mary Baldwin College with a double concentration in art and communication. She has more than 25 years' experience as a graphic designer at Virginia Tech, and served as the marketing manager for Continuing and Professional Education until 2014. Her paintings have been featured in several solo shows including the Holtzman Alumni Center gallery and the Hahn Garden Pavilion at Virginia Tech, the Montgomery Museum of Art and History in Christiansburg, and Bluefield College. She currently teaches oil painting for Virginia Tech's Lifelong Learning Institute. <image:title>Blog - Linda Hinson - “I have always loved to draw. After changing my major four times while attending Virginia Tech, I finally landed in art, feeling that passion was more important than practicality. A few years later, when practicality started to matter, I returned to school to pursue a teaching certificate. After the first education class, I knew I was meant to be a teacher. But that would mean setting aside one passion for another. After teaching Art for 33 years in Montgomery County Public Schools and 3 years at Radford University, I am now finding the time to concentrate on my passion for drawing. My most recent series is centered around animals. The ability to have subjective experiences is not unique to humans. If we include the understanding of the nature and consequences of an act or decision as part of the definition of intelligence, then we have more in common with other species than previously thought. Many animals show skilled use of reasoning and the ability to learn or deal with new situations. They are not solely instinct-driven. Animals are not separate but connected to other species and their environments. They pollinate, create pathways, fertilize, and clean up. I am often struck by how many humans do not see themselves as part of an intricate system of interconnectedness but as a governing body falsely in charge of it.” -Linda Hinson</image:title>

Our mission is simple: safe spaces and solidarity through visibility. We aim to create art that amplifies voices, celebrates diversity, and promotes social justice. Following in the brushstrokes before us, we use printmaking as a tool for change, believing that art has the power to challenge norms and foster community. As a business rooted in inclusivity, we are dedicated to supporting marginalized communities and making sure everyone is seen, heard, and valued.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Jane MacAdoo - "I retired from nursing approximately three years ago and took up painting primarily in acrylics as well as developing an interest in photography, both self-taught. Through the encouragement of several fine local artists, especially Ruth Lefko and David Ferrell, and members of the Fine Arts Center for the NRV and the Blacksburg Regional Arts Association, I decided to join the Montgomery Museum of Arts and History and participate in the Arts NRV market. I love the natural beauty of Southwest VA and wildlife here and much of my art and photography attempts to share that." -Jane, 2023</image:title>
